Sensory deprivation tanks, or commonly referred to as either float tanks or isolation tanks, have increased in popularity a great deal in recent years. They are essentially tanks filled with water at skin temperature that also contain salt. Users can then float in them for a set amount of time.
First being used in 1954, they were a means of experimenting on the effects of depriving an individual of sensory stimulation. A pioneer of these studies, John C. Lilly, did these experiments for 10 years and then decided to try them in conjunction with LSD, which was legal at the time. In the very least, even if the treatment has psychosomatic effects for the user, those that take advantage of it swear by its positive effects.
